Fly Fishing Knots, The Albright Knot. Backing to Fly Line.

Attaching fly line to backing using the Albright Knot.

Years ago we would have to tie our oun loops to the back end of the fly line to attach our running line. The nail knot, tied with a tube is easier but when we expect to be into our backing with every hook up I want a knot that will slide thru the rods guide smoothly. The nail knot does this fine, but when you have a fast bone fish, or permit, salmon, or steelhead, you want a knot that won’t strip the outer coating of the fly line. Now days it seems all the fly line makers are putting a loop on the back end of the lines. Here we show you how to tie the Albright Knot.

How to fly Fish: How to Unravel a Tapered Leader

Do you ever have trouble getting a new knotless, tapered leader from the package to the end of your line? When I was a guide, I used to watch anglers struggle with this all the time. Sometimes they’d end up with a tangle bad enough that they’d just grab a new leader and start over. At about $3.50 a pop, that’s an expensive mistake if it happens often enough. The truth is, unraveling a prepackaged leader is quite simple if you know a couple of tricks. Here’s a technique shown to me by my friend Macauley Lord one day on the banks of the Rapid River in Maine.

Is fly fishing as complicated?

as some books and people make it seem? I’ve done it once before in the Laurel Highlands in PA, and caught a wild brook trout. That was years ago, and I want to get back into it, and it seems confusing. I understand you have to know the knots and all, but is it really that complicated for choosing leaders, tippets, and which flies to use? I really want to start fly fishing more, and would like any advice. Thank you!

AC is correct, (thumbs up).

Any able-bodied person that is modestly athletic can learn the basic’s of CASTING a Fly-rod within 1 hour. It’s all timing and "10 to 2" O’Clock.

Choosing fly’s isn’t that hard either- depending on WHERE you are, (although, if your fishing highly "pressured" Trout waters it can be VERY difficult). If your in the middle of B.F.E, a simple Gnat imitation OR Wooly Bugger will work wonders.

Choosing leaders isn’t tough. It all depends on the average sized Trout your targeting. With all the websites on-line with diagrams and video’s showing you how to tie knots and rig-up Fly tackle- you’ll never have to worry.

I use to teach people how to Fly-fish. I told them:

If you feel uncomfortable spending a ton of money on a hobby your not sure you’ll like, BUY a cheaper outfit and target Bluegill and Panfish. Why????

Bluegill and Panfish are extremely easy to catch on a Fly-rod!!!! You can "learn the basic’s" of casting, knot tying, Etc. in an environment where your catch ratio is almost 100%! When your catching a Bluegill on every cast and your confidence level shoots through the roof you just can’t help beginning to love Fly-fishing.

Meanwhile, your learning a ton of good info- it’s like learning to do Math while eating candy. (lol)

Here is a basic set-up that is dirt cheap (BUT, extremely reliable and able to catch small 1-2LB Trout).

1. Pflueger, 1494 reel- http://www.cabelas.com/product/Pflueger174-1400-Series-Medalist-Fly-Reels/728549.uts?WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

2. Betts Spider- http://www.basspro.com/Betts-Bream-Madness/product/10210283/126729

Wooly Bugger- http://www.basspro.com/Wooly-Bugger-Flies-12-Pack/product/10205288/63453

Get some OK line (WF 6)- http://www.basspro.com/Scientific-Anglers-Mastery-Headstart-Floating-Fly-Line/product/29370/61325#reviews

And you’ve got yourself a pretty decent Panfish/Small Trout outfit.

At roughly $150 (including some backing and misc other tackle you’ll need) this is the best way to begin- if your hesitant.

Hope this helps you somehow?
